IH vs. McCormick?

Greetings all --

I recently picked up my first IH and thanks to a little help from you fine folks she's now running well. I'm a bit confused about the history of IH and of the use of (apparently) both the IH and the McCormick names.

Mine is a '47 Cub, previous owner had painted and decaled it. Decal says "McCormick Farmall Cub" with the IH logo on sides of hood and the IH logo on the nose.

I've read the few paragraphs on this site and that leads me to believe that IH was formed pre-1905 and has existed 'till the merger with Case. That being the case, then what's up with the McCormick name being used sometimes, and with separate listings on some boards for Farmalls?

I just want to understand a little better, and to be sure my Cub is "properly dressed."

Many thanks,

Pete P.

Pete, your 1947 Cub should read: "McCormick Deering Farmall Cub". The stickers that are on it are for a later tractor.

Pete: IH was formed as a corperation about 100 years ago mainly by two founding family companies, McCormick and Deering. Both those names stayed around for years to come. Most tractors well into the 1940s had McCormick Deering in the decal. Then the name Deering was dropped. The McCormick name stayed on decals until 1967.

Heard an explaination on RFD TV old iron show that when IH was first formed a condition was that Mc Cormick and Deering names would be continued to be used as long as members of the founding families survived. Which ended with last Deering death in the 40's and McCormick in 60's. My Nickel Dick Davis

There was no condition in the merger deal- it was more a way of keeping anti-trust prosecuters of their back. IH started looking at getting rid of the McCormick or Deering names as early as the early 1940s.

Dick: Sounds very reasonable, as give or take a bit, that is precisely what happened. One exception though Brooks McCormick being progeny of both families. It must have had a generation limit.

There were also a few names from some of the minor companies hung around for awhile. The name P & O as an example stayed with plows for some years.

So I take it then that it is equally correct in my case to say "IH Cub" or "Farmall Cub" or "McCormick Farmall Cub."

Thanks,

PEte

It will suffice to call it a "Farmall Cub." "Cub" would do, if the person(s) you were discussing with knew you were talking about a tractor. Otherwise, they might think you were talking about a "Piper Cub" airplane.

I've got a '59 model of the tractor type that I am restoring right now. Wish I had one of the flying type!

Peabody, I would reckon it would depend on whether you are hanging around the hanger or the feed store as to how you describe a Cub. Most guys around the hanger would probably be using terms such as J-3 as often as "Piper". The guys at the feed store, on the other hand, probably wouldnt know what a J-3 was unless you included "Piper Cub" in the discussion.

Point well-taken, Paul. However, my buddy who OWNS a feed store gives me a ride in his PA-11 Cub from time-to-time!

Pete, The Cub, probably more than any other IH tractor of the same era had more decal changes than the others. Many of the changes had to do with the placement of the decals and it seems they couldnt quite decide where the word "Cub" should go from year to year. When ordering decals, it would be a good idea to go by year and serial number. Probably the best thing you can do is interact with other Cub enthusiasts as they know more than I can tell you here. By enthusiasts, I mean someone who really knows Cubs, and not just someone who repainted one. There are several sites dedicated to the Cub. Here is but one: Link
