I am going to drive 400 miles to look at a 560 and I want to know about the old type TA's. Do I check it like a newer one, pull the engine down with the brakes while in low range?Or is there a better way? I have never been around the old type TA so I guess it is new to me . Are the old ones like the newer hydraulic ones, does it free wheel downhill in low? Does it hurt it to run for very long in low?
Thanks for any information

Chris,

You should be able to run that T/A all you want in low range and the manual tells you this. That T/A throwout bearing will be running all the time, but they don't seem to give much trouble.

It's kinda like the newer hydraulic clutches in that the throwout bearings spin & are under load all the time.

You can check the TA clutch with the brakes. I think you will want to have the TA in the direct drive mode (Lever forward) Apply the brakes and really pull the engine hard then pull the TA lever back. If the TA hooks up good it will not slip and should be good. For your second question yes it will free wheel on the low side. Just make sure when your going down hill or parking that you have the TA lever in the forward position. If for example your transporting in 5th low and you throttle down your tractor will free wheel. Do not shift the lever forward under this circumstance. Get yourself a operators manual for your tractor will help you a lot.
