In a reply to Dave about cleaning a gas tank
last week, you mentioned using muriatic acid.
I have a cub tank in need of cleaning, and I
have some muriatic acid. What procedure and
how much acid did you use? Thanks in advance
for any help, Kevin

Let me first tell you to use extreme caution, this stuff is dangerous, wait until the weather will allow you to be outside, and have a garden hose, with the water turned on at the spigot and ready. In my first attempt, I diluted the acid 50% with water, put one gallon of water in the tank and then added the acid. I also tried it full strength, and it worked better, with no damage to the tank. Pour in the solution, put the cap on, and gently rock, rotate, etc, the tank so that the acid will reach and be in contact with the entire inside surface of the tank, if there are some particularly bad areas, support the tank so the acid will stay in contact for a period of time. When you think it is clean, pour it out, it would be good to try and catch it in a container if possible, then fill the tank with water, dump it out and repeat rinsing 4 or 5 times, or whatever you think is necessary, I left mine sitting out in the sun all day to dry it out. Again, use extreme caution, do not get it on your skin, in your eyes, and do not breath the fumes. Rubber gloves and goggles would be advisable.

I don't know for sure what the factory finish for an IH gas tank is. I suspect it is electroplated zinc. Muriatic acid will strip zinc off of steel very quickly. If the zinc is electroplated, which by definition means thin, the zinc should be history within a few seconds with acid straight from the bottle.

thanks for the info! I just got back inside from trying, and it worked great! I have used muriatic before, so I was well prepared with gloves and respirator. I'll let her bake and dry in this carolina sun tomorrow and try it out. Thanks again, Kevin

I will also add that the tank will become too heavy to handle if you put much more than about 2-3 gallons in it.

Forget it -- brain not connected to eyes--somehow I read "cub tank" as "carburetor". My eyes or brain usually don't go bad this early in the day -- although you still should neutralize the acid. Wish there was a way to delete these posts (or learn to read), done this before.

I'm not Rustyfarmall, but don't use muratic acid (HCl) or hydrochloric acid in a carburator. Use carb cleaner. HCl has to be neutralized, otherwise it will continue eating metal. Has to be neutralized with sodium carbonate, etc. With carb cleaner, let it soak awhile and blow it out with compressed air. Much simpler and safer.

That's sodiumBIcarbonate, or sodium hydroxide, etc -- not worth messing with.
