A friend of mine has a 1931 H torn down. He took the PTO shaft out of the transmission housing and found a problem with the slotted end of the transmission countershaft. The slotted end is beat up bad. Apparantely something happened when the PTO was engaged. Can this slotted end be removed from the countershaft seperately, or is the end part of the entire countershaft? The slotted end looks exactly like the slotted countershaft retaining nut on the opposite side by the lift pump.

Yes the entire shaft has to be replaced. The problem is sloted shaft was only used on early
tractors, later or most used splined shaft. If you use later shaft use the PTO that matches.I think
you ment to say 1941 on tractor year.

Yes, you are correct. I meant to say 1941. How hard is that countershaft to take out? I think the end can be built back up and shaped back. If that does not work, will a later assembly fit into the older tractor?

Yes later shaft can be used and IH sold only splined shaft as replacement in later years. You will need later style PTO to go with shaft.Recommend getting a Manual to work on trans.
trans. top cover, input shaft and main shaft need removed then countershaft.Lot of used H parts out there, should be able to find either shaft if yours can't be repaired.

The newer (splined) shaft can be installed. My '39 H has the newer shaft and newer PTO.
