I plowed up that 6 acre field today. My 400 was having fun. Going to disk it and drag it tomorow.
How many pounds of oats should I buy to use as a cover crop for my Alfalfa? I picked up 100 pounds of a Alfalfa/ timmothy mix today. Counter guy said that was what I needed for 6 acres. No one around here has oats. All the seed guys are out around here so will go hunting for some.
If you got some seed oats in Central MN let me know.

What we have here is a problem .Do we want oats to harvest or do we want alfalfa ?In central Illinois if you plant 3bu.or 200 which is about 5 bu. they will grow up fall over and kill out the alfalfa.I put no more than 10bu.on my 7ac. field when Iwant a decent stand of alfalfa.

We mow and bale the cover oats when in the dough stage regardless of the height of the alfalfa. Makes good cow feed through a processor. The alfalfa makes a good stand afterward. We can't leave the oats to compete for moisture after this point anyway, so we don't ever figure on a crop of grain.

Kelly, we just seeded down 10 acers of grass hay and used 1.5 bu/ac of seed oats for cover. planted 2 weeks ago and the oats are 3 inches high already. The grass is just starting to poke through.

Thanks.
I picked them up today. The guy bagged it for me.
Didnt get the land disked today though. My 400 started acting up. Kept loosing power and sputtering. Its starving for fuel at full rpm when the govoner kicks in. Let it idle for a bit then can haul butt for a few 100 feet more then starves again. Something must be blocking a fuel line or the sedement bowl. Drat!!! wanted to get that done today.

Welcome to farming. Planting after you get a little shower should be almost as good.

In this neck of the woods (NY) most guys stay aroud 2 bu/acre for an oats cover crop. 3 bushels is fine for straight oats, but you need to back off a little so they give the alfalfa a chance.

Kelly, I like to put on 100 pounds per acre of seed oats or 200 pounds per acre of bin oats. If you take oats out of a bin and run them through a seed cleaner put on at 200 pounds per acre you will never know the difference.

Kelly, If the seed oat dealers are out....Go to the feed store and buy the biggest bags of feed oats you can find. Being that they are for just cover and there is only 6 acres to it might be a little more cost but not that much on just 6 acres. Just a thought.
Later,
