Found a 560 diesel for sale tonight, tractor is in good shape, but does not run. Here is what the guy said happened: He was baling hay when sudddenly it started to loose power and smoke alot until it died. Now it will turn over normal, but it will not run. The engine was in good shape prior to this and it used no oil. What do you guys think could be wrong, or what could have happened? Ruturn line plugged? This is kinda urgent cause there is 2 other guys waiting to buy it, so I have to decide fast. Thanks Wide Open.

Had the same problem with my 560. Mine was just a plugged outlet from the fuel tank. It sucked the sediment bowl almost empty. Never had the problem again.

Disconnect the fuel return line from the injection pump, including remove the fitting from the pump and try to start it. If it starts OK while spilling the return fuel, your return line is plugged, likely with a piece of the the plastic elastomeric ring from the injection pump governor. Repairs for this cost as little as $35.00 for parts, and whatever the labor charge is, up to the cost of a new pump, if other damage is found after pump disassembly. If it is just the pump ring, you may be able to find a mechanic who will just replace that, without the high diesel injection pump price for a complete overhaul.

Check also, for a free flow of fuel through the filters up to the transfer pump inlet on the injection pump. Clogged fuel filters, or a piece of crud in the fitting at the bottom of the tank can cause grief, too, as well as water in the fuel.

well depends on what he wants,if you can get it for 4-500 bucks you really can't go wrong, when i bought my 460 the salvage yard offered them 1300 for it and they said if i wanted it for that it was mine,i figured if it eventually had major problems i could always sell it to the salvage yard and not lose much if any money,i know a friend of mine bought a 460 diesel and it ended up having a cracked head, all said and done they paid 800 for the tractor and time the head was done and on another 1000.so it adds up in a hurry on the diesels.

If this were not a serious and expensive problem the guy would not be selling the tractor. He would have gotten it fixed. Let it go.

I think if you looked there are a lot of people that sell stuff cheap for a simple problem. Bought a non running IH 354 with loader and bush hog brand 6' cutter for under 2K, after i got it running and cleaned up and painted I have 2500 in it and it is worth 6K. loader works great also.
