I have a 1960 Farmall 460 equipped with a Torque Amplifier. I am not familiar with this piece of equipment. While backing down a small grade I noticed that the engine wasn't holding the tractor back, in other words it was free-wheeling; later the same day while going forward down the same grade with the T/A engaged the tractor free-wheeled again, when I disengaged the T/A the engine started to hold the tractor and load back. When pulling aload the T/A seems to work all right. Is this how a T/A is supposd to operate? When I bought the tractor I thought the T/A worked like a Hi/Lo range and would offer extra pulling power and braking power in hilly terrain. Any information on the T/A will be appreciated. Also, what would be the weight of this tractor? It is a 6 cyl. gas. Thanks. StuartM

A gas tricycle 460 with 13.6-38 filled with calcium & one set of rear weights weighs about 6800 lb. Dry weight was around 5260. Torque in low range will free-wheel downhill. I think this is a sure way to damage it. We used a 460 HARD for 33 years-was careful to never let it free wheel & didn't use torque til tractor warmed up & the torque lasted 33 years.

Definitely working as designed. Only the newer hydraulic TAs on 706 and newer/larger tractors will hold the load back. Mechanical ones on tractors from the Super MTA up through the last 686 will take you for a ride when pulled on a downhill grade.

The sure sign of a fully functional TA is if it will keep the tractor from rolling backwards down a slope with the TA ahead, and the clutch pushed in until the tractor stops, but not quite all the way in.

Dang, Stuart, sounds like it's working finer than frog hair. Wish mine was like yours.

you will uin the TA if you use it for "braking" while pulling a load downhill. The TA is at its best when used only to give the extra traction needed when "heavy" spots are encountered durring standard farming operations.

Stuart,

Sounds like she is right as rain and sounds like you found a good one.

Yes, they give you extra torque, but nobody said anything about "braking power".

Don't know the weight; perhaps around 5 or 5500?
