my friend just bought a 830 case( i know this isn't red but you guys always have great advice!) and the generator is bad. it's much more economical to use an alternator and we can't figure out how to get it wired up. mounting was no sweat.

thanks in advance

Find a wiring diagram from the car, truck, tractor, whatever that your alternator was originally used in, and wire it up accordingly. If you bought the alternator new, the parts store should be able to tell you what vehicles this unit would have been used in.

I switched 2 tractors from generator to alternator and 6 to 12 volt. I used the Delco 3 wire alternator with internal regulator. There is an excellent diagram done by Bob M on the archives of this forum. I don't know about wiring on the external regulator type. With so many of the Delco ones around in wrecking yards and all it easy to find. Are you also converting from 6 to 12 volt?

the 830 is gas and the alternator is a delco with two posts on the back, one power and one ground and then a two point connecter labeled R & F. it does not have a internal regulator.

Get one with a single post on the back. That can be connected to the large post on the starter solenoid. The one that have the R & F are used for regulator type systems.

When I worked for IH, crawler division. I would often change the generator type equipment we had in maintenance to single wire alternators. It made the wiring quite simple and dependable.
