560 Questions

I'm looking at a farmall 560d that one of the local dealers has for sale. It's a wide front, has 65% on the tires, original paint, a medium duty loader, overall, it's in good shape. When it came to the dealer it had a bad valve. The dealer replaced the valves, glow plugs, battery and planed the head, about $2800 according to the paperwork. I'm thinking I can get it for about $4500, give or take. What do you guys (or gals) think?

Thanks to all for your input. I think I'm going to pass on this one, I just couldn't get comfortable with the thought of spending that much for it. Besides, the wife saw it and about had a cow! I don't want to have to justify it to her when I can't justify it to myself. Aint it funny how something doesn't look as good the second time you look at it? Thanks again. Greg

Aw heck!!

I just bought one that didn't look that good to me the first time I looked at it! And too,.....there is always a better one just around the corner.

My wife tells me to quit trying to save them all. But, I see these grand old dames setting all by themselves and it just makes me sad...then my emotions take over and I think, "Well, with just a little here and just a little there, she'd be like new again."

Don't worry, you'll find your tractor.

$2,800 for a valve job, glow plugs and a battery. Wow! Must be quite a high labor rate at that shop. I would have to agree with Hugh. Thats kind of steep for a 560, for a little bit more you can get a better tractor.

Fryman,

I know that the engine that is in that tractor has been around for eions, but at one time my dad owned a 560.

Every year it had to go thru this same "head thing" you are describing. He just could not keep a head on it. After the third time around he traded it for a 656, which ran for years without a problem.

Supposedly, the two tractors had the same engine; go figure.

Allen: I too had both 560 and 656, both diesel and both almost trouble free for the first 10,000 hours each. And that 10,000 hours went on each of them at the rate of about 800 per year. In my lifetime my farm probably clocked a 100,000 on 8 Farmalls from a Super A to a 1066. The most economical horsepower of the lot were 560D and 656D.

Hi Hugh,

Yep, I agree. We used to pull a 6 row Lilliston cultivator with the 656D and I would measure the fuel consumption. It would pull all summer long using 1.9gph.

I never measured it years ago when we used the tractor for plowing, but I would guess 4 to 4.5gph would be the high side; and we plow fairly deep here.

The nice thing about these tractors was that you didn't have to fill up at noon. Just keep right on a-goin.

Later on, we bought a 966 for a plow tractor and a 766 as a second-tillage unit. Those two were a perfect match to each other and worked well together.

But, and I also notice it with this 310, the direct injected engines just seem to be noisier to me.

Allen: I worked a sandy loam soil thus pulled a 5x16 semi-mount with 656. I did ocasionally use 1066 but found it just cost me more to plow. 25% faster burning 3 times the fuel. Don't get me wrong 1066 was a good tractor, but only when it was loaded to the limit. 1066 was usually spreading manure when I wanted to plow anyhow. I usually did only 4 different jobs on farm with 1066, 12 ton manure spreader, forage harvester, 25' cultivator and a 20' disk with 20" plates.

Interesting thing about tractors IH 06 and 56 very fuel effecient, 66 and 86 lost that. I had a 100 hp Deere a 75 model very fuel efficent. Then in the next line of Deeres they lost it.

I don't know what it is about design engineers, they just don't get that word efficiency. When I learned to drive a car my dad had a 57 Chevy that gave 27 miles to the Canadian gallon. Today I have a Buick LeSabre that gives me 27 miles to the Canadian gallon. My dad hauled a ton of feed home from the feed store piled on the fins of his 57 Chevy. I wouldn't want to try that with this Buick. Today that would trouble some pickups. Progress is grand.

that doesn't sound too bad a local dealer here has a narrow front 560 gas with a dual loader,they are asking 5995.i bought my 460 utility for 1300 and the westendorf loader cost me 1700 plus a few minor things that needed attention i figure i have 3700 or so in it,i could use tires which is another 600 bucks or so so i don't think thats too bad of a deal.

I was visiting with a local fella yesterday that was telling me that his neighbor just bought a new $80K JD & loader to feed cattle with.

How many lifetimes will he have to feed cattle to make that one pencil out?

Fyrman: Here is the problem as I see it, at $4500. you wouldn't need a whole lot more money for a 656, 706 or 756. With these newer tractors you would get a Catergory II draft controlled hitch. You would also get a modern type platform with much more user friendly seat and controls.

You are absolutely correct Hugh. As much as I like the old 560's that is way too much money for one. Like you said for that kind of money you can get a 706 or 756. Around here you can get a decent 806 for $5000 or so.

I agree, the loader could easily be worth $800 to $1500. That makes the tractor a bit reasonable - now if the dealer will warranty the head work (or the entire tractor) for 400 hours or so it makes it fairly reasonable.
