Tranny oil questions for an IH 1206

My friend is changing the transmission/differential/hydraulic oil and filter in his IH 1206 Turbo and he was about to put in hydraulic fluid and I thought "that's not right" so I told him to hold everything and I'd ask here for him. He is supposed to use the Hy-Tran stuff right (I think that's what it's called). He doesn't have any manuals to find anything out. Anyone know how much he should buy? Thanks for the help.

Yes, Hy-tran. 1206 holds about 16 gallons, but it is highly reccomended that you fill them 5 gallons overfull. This keeps the suction tubes covered by oil on steep hills. Remind your friend that unless the transmission has been apart and updated, the axle housings on the 06 and early 56 series are seperate from the rest of the transmission, and must be drained through the plugs at the very bottom of each axle housing, and refilled to the check plugs on the side of the axle housing. He should have removed 5 plugs to completely drain the rear end.

Thanks KB, I will pass on your information. I saw those two drain plugs on the sides near the axles but they seemed to be in the differential casting and it was confusing. I will look for the height check plugs too. One more question, how are those axle housings filled (from where)? And I assume they are using the same hy-trans oil too (or is that regular gear oil)?

The plugs on the sides of the axle housings are the check/fill plugs. The drain plugs are at the very bottom of the axle housings, gotta crawl underneath the tractor to see them. Axle housings take Hy-Tran. Yes, it is confusing, and most guys don't know to check/change the axle housings. IH took care of that problem about halfway through the 56 sereis by drilling a hole between the differential housing and the axle housing, making it all one compartment. 06's get updated when the rear end is apart by drilling 1/2" holes on each side and knocking out the freeze plug between the inner axle bearing and the differential housing.
