Could you get a 656 with the 310 German Diesel or were they only available with the 282 (560 engine)?? Thanks, Cmore

The 656 had the D-282 and C-263. The 666 replaced the 656, the only differences were that it had the D-312 American-built diesel or the C-291, and minor decal and grill changes. The 686 replaced the 666, with the only difference being decals at first. In 1979, the D-312 was replaced with the D-310 German. So, if you want a 656 with a 310, just get yourself a late-model 686.

Did they lengthen out the frame for the 666? Not only does it just seem a little longer, but I know they lenthened the 706 when they replaced the D-282 with the D-310(C-290 replaced C-263 as well), and was wondering if they did the same when they switched over to the 666.

They probably did, but I don't know that for a fact. You are right about the D-310 706's having different frame rails. The C-291 706's would still have the D-282/C-263 frame rails, since all IH 6-cylinder gas engines and glow plug diesels shared the same block.

Chris,

Hmmmm, interesting question.

I notice that my tractor with the 310 has the frame rails bolted to the outside of the clutch housing (rather than to the forward end) and that they do appear longer.

Didn't notice this before your post. I suspect you are right.

Allan

Allan, they had to bolt the frame rails to the outside of the clutch housing to make room for that big 310, since the 656/666/686 has such a small clutch housing. The 706, 756, and 826 have a 12" clutch and the 310/358 barely fits. 686 only has a 9" clutch for some reason.
