M throttle

I have a problem with my Super M on applying the gas throttle up and down. When increasing throttle you move the lever one or may two notches and there is know response. But, if you move maybe four notches you get a response but then its more then you wanted. The same thing occurs going down. Also if you move the throttle lever all the way down to idle position, it will not idle down all of they way unless you give the throttle a rapid up and down movement. Any help would be appreciated.

The reason is probably simpler than that. Check the throttle linkage under the hood beside the valve cover. There are two opposing springs on the rod that have the pin for the lever between them. These smooth out some jerky throttle movement. There could be enough play that the diagonal rod is not seeing a change. Or check the arms inside the governor housing. There are enough springs and such in the throttle system that a small enough movement will not make a change at the carb. This is usually the cause of why a tractor won't shut completely down to low idle without a quick snap of the throttle.

Ted- Most likely the governor to carb throttle shaft linkage is binding. Suggest you proceed like this:

1 - Remove the sloped cover from the top of the governor riser (it’s the cover with the vent tube running from it to the head). With the governor handle set at idle try to move the bellcrank by hand - it should move up and down freely.

2 – If the bellcrank is binding, remove the pin from the bellcrank Now try moving the governor rod (the vertical link) up and down, and rotating the throttle shaft (the horizontal shaft) back and forth to figure out which one is binding.

3 – If you find the throttle shaft is stiff, try loosening (but don’t remove) the two screws in both the retaining plates at both ends of the throttle shaft tube. Wiggle the tube around then retighten the screws. If the throttle shaft is still stiff, the problem’s in the carburetor (bent or sticking throttle plate shaft). You’ll need to remove the carburetor to fix.

4 – However if it’s the governor riser rod that’s sticking, it’s time to go inside the governor. Problem could be a worn out thrust bearing, worn rockshaft bushings, a simple buildup of sludge, etc.
