Ack - where do I start? 62-ish Cub

So - I'm working on this Cub Serial 220068J, which I think puts it in the 1962-63 range. For what it's worth, it's yellow/white, but has significant red paint under the yellow top coat. It's got mega-hours dragging a reel gangmower behind it on a golf course. It will be used for our sorta large (3 acre) yard and garden. We don't need it to mow, but it would be excellent to have a bucket loader and snowplow as well as dragging a disk harrow through the garden, if only to upstage the neighbors :)

It's weak - we can drive it, sorta, or run the belly mowerj - but not both at once.

It's had no maintenance to speak of for years. I bought the IH shop manual and have started stripping it for paint. Where do I start on the engine? I played hell getting the plugs out - next is the distributor/points, I guess - I'm a little reluctant to break into the engine until I check out the externally fixable stuff.

Thanks in advance..... .

Don't forget to change the oil and filter, and other fluids. Wouldn't hurt to hit all the zerks. Don't forget the one in the clutch housing. Drain the transmission, flush with kerosene and refill with Hy-tran. Also use Hy-tran in the hydraulics.

Always start with the ignition and fuel system. When they are as good as possible, the mechanical condition of the engine can be evaluated. Even a mechanically perfect engine will do poorly with bad ignition or fuel system. I bought a Cub that barely ran, would not even pull itself onto the trailer. Had to use come-along. But turning with the handcrank convinced me that the engine was really in good shape, good compression on each cylinder. After the fuel and ignition tuneup, it is the best running Cub I have ever owned. Owned them since 1953, all purchased used.

Plugs, points condensor rotor and cap are good places to start. Might also want to look at the condition of the plug wires. While you are in the area check to see if the distributor advance is working. Also a good time to run a compression check on the engine to see if there is a aproblem there. Does it smoke excessively? Did plugs look like it burned a lot of oil? A carb overhaul would probably not be wasted at this point along with function of governor. When you get all the outside relatively cheap stuff done then if you still have the problem you can tear into the engine. Could also be that timing is off.
