504 Generator Troubles

I posted this in the Tractor Talk forum also. Sorry if anybody sees it twice.

Background: I purchased an IH 504 gasser about 2 months ago for use around our acreage (mowing pasture, digging post holes, loader work, etc.) Tractor is 12 volt with a rebuilt generator on it. It worked like a top for a while then it would not start without being jumped. This did not bother me too much since the tractor still worked after being jumped. I figured I would keep using it and decipher the problem when I had time.

Problem: I had a lot of tractor work I wanted to do today, but now it won't run with any load. It was fine for a while this morning doing loader work, but after a while the trouble started. I can jump it and get it running and it will idle fine. As soon as I try to load up the engine with the loader or even just to move the tractor it dies. If I am really careful I can get it moving in first and move it around, but I can't let the clutch out slow enough to keep it running in any other gear. It will lift the loader empty, but dies as soon as I try to lift any weight.

Thoughts: This tractor had a new battery in it when I bought it. I am thinking that it started fully charged and would start the tractor fine. If the charging system is not working, it discharged until it would not start the tractor, but had enough juice to keep it running. Now it is discharged enough that it won't keep the engine running under load. I am not sure why this would be affected by load though. Any incite would be appreciated. How do I begin to trouble shoot this?

Thanks

Kirk - Definitely sounds like a low battery problem and would account for the gradual loss of power under load. Reason: As battery voltage drops so does the spark voltage. And the higher the load, the more spark voltage is required to fire the engine.

How to fix? If your 504 has an ammeter, punch below for a trouble shooting chart. If it just has an idiot light, you'll need a DC voltmeter place across the battery to help sort it out. Then substitute "voltmeter reads 13.5 volts or higher?" for "does the ammeter indicate charge?" in the trouble shooting chart.

Recommend however you give the battery an overnight charge before you begin. Good luck!

The link did not come across. Can you re-post it. I had to go buy a charger, but I already have it charging.

Thanks
