Ok, got the Farmall H (1949) from a guy who got it from an Auction. Guy doesn't know anything about what type of engine oil it's had or has in it. What's the best way to determine what type (detergent or non) oil the tractor has in it? Any easy ways to do this? Will lab work be needed? Any links would be helpful. I've read all the detergent vs. non so I just want to figure out what type it already has, and I can't ask the owner.

Most every farmer I knew went to detergent oil in the fiftys. You might find a few old tractors that have been running non detergent oil but in my opinion there are very few. Engines will sludge up on the best detergent oil if it is not changed occasionaly so sludge is not a sure sign of non detergent oil. Just my 2 cents.

I bought an old A once that was pretty dirty on the inside of the engine.I cleaned out what I could from the opil pan and valve cover and changed the oil useing non detergent,I substituded one quart for detergent, next oil change two and so on until i was at full detergent oil. Each time running about 50 hrs between each change and new filters each time. This allowed the remaining sludge I couldnt get it to brreak down slowly instead of big chunks and cloging everything up.Worked good.It broke a cam tooth and jumped timing nad when I pulled the front cover off it was pretty clean. When I pulled the valve cover it wasnt shine new looking but it was a heck of alot cleaner than when I first took it off.

It is pretty easy to remove the oil pan, clean it out good and check the screen on the oil pump. I think it would then be ok to use detergent oil as you would have cleaned out the sludge already. If you take the oil pan off and find it clean you will have something to celebrate! About an hour's work can tell you much about your H.

I could be wrong,(and often am), but it seems to me that about 99% of previous owners used detergent oil in everything. Even if they had used non detergent, I don't think the detergent oil will instantly clean, and break up 40 or 50 years of sludge.

It really doesn't matter what is in there now. If you don't know the history of the oil changes it would be a good idea to change the oil and filter right away. Personally I would change all of the fluids. The price of new oil/grease is cheap compared to the price of repairs. If you are not sure if it has had detergent oil in it or not you may want to change the oil and filter again after a moderate amount of use. The detergent oil could loosen up a lot of the sludge and stuff that has been sitting around for a long time. When I bought my C I didn't have any apparent leaks until I filled everything back up to the proper levels. Numerous gaskets and seals later I magaged to get them to stop leaking.
