Head Gasket Problem?

Lads - my IH624 seemed to have a problem a couple of weeks ago - had a leaking rad ... but there was no visible leak. Found very tiny bubbles in my oil - and then the colour turned rather murky (but had no bubbles). Funny part was my oil level stayed the same - even though I probably put at least a gallon of water in the rad?

I have since drained the oil and got quite the mixture - some water, bit of antifreeze, and oil. Put in new oil, changed the filter - and since then my rad level has stayed up and my oil is clean. Throughout all this the old girl hasn't missed a beat - sounds the same with no visible increase in smoke of any colour? Now I have only run her about 8 hours since the oil change ... but can a head gasket fix itself - or am I just hoping (calm before the storm!)

Hi, if you have water or anti-freeze in the oil pan, it's a leak to the cylinder sleeve O-rings. Don't run an engine with some anti-freeze in the oil, bad damage to the crankshaft!!! Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Thanks Lads - like I say she hasn't shown any more leakage - the rad level has stayed constant? - but if I see her head south again I'll have to investigate!

Doesn't matter right now as she has been stuck in the back field for a week now - waiting for a week of dry weather (& my neighbours 4X4!).

You know my son had a similar problem on a p/u truck engine. He said (later) that he had added about a gallon of water to the rad but the current problem was white smoke out the tail pipe, lots of it.

I told him to back off the pressure cap and see if it quit. He said it quit and he reinstalled the cap and now it doesn't do it.

So I asked myself the same question and my answer was "don't see how but something changed".

So that is my answer to you. Dunno!
