My 39' M has a dipstick to check the oil but also has the petcocks in the oil pan. This is a disolete tractor from the factory, would this be right to have a dipstick? I did look up the numbers and they seem to be right for this tractor.

If it has boss on left side of engine for fuel pump that is covered with plate it is probaly U6 combine or stationary engine or factory replacement block. If not it has probaly been drilled for dipstick.

all m blocks are cast with the place for a dipstick, the power unit engines had the dipstick installed from the factory and if the block was factory remanufactured it was drilled and a expantion plug put it the hole.

The previous owner could have had it drilled for a dipstick, many had the raised place on the block that was drilled for the later engines, but I don't know when IH started doing that. I once saw a 1952 M with a dipstick, I imagine it was drilled.

I'll bet someone had it drilled. Grandpa had our H block drilled for a dipstick, then cut a dipstick to fit and made a "full" line. A bit handier than the high-low petcocks.

Paul,

I would guess that the block has been swapped out within the past few years.
