O/T dipping the Flag

Got me going this morning. I went to the Post Office and the Flag was flying half-staff.(2nd time in a week) I went in and asked the clerk "what the h*ll is wrong with your Flag?" Seems some dip sh*t ex-posal guy died, No disrespect to the family but do we dip the UNITED STATES FLAG evey time some nobody dies? I came home and got mine out and ran it up the pole and it will fly there all summer.
There I just had to vent that to my friends.

By the way, "dipping" the flag (as in a parade salute) is never appropriate. There was a big controversy about that in the 1936 Olympic Games when the U.S. would not follow other countries in dipping their flags to the hosts' Nazi flag.

You're really talking about flying the flag at half mast, not dipping it. My understanding is that the president or a governor can issue a proclamation that flags be flown at half staff. I would suspect the U.S. congress can too, although I'm not sure on that one. But the notion of someone personally ordering the flag to half staff just because someone they respect has died is inappropriate, however touching.

not to be a pain, but it is possible this ex-postie was also a Veteran. In that case, it is VERY appropriate that the flag be dipped for this nobody!

I have learned a lot about patriotism and respect for Veterans from my American brothers and sisters, and I for one fly my flag at half staff whenever someone I know who is a Vet has passed on. This is the least I can do to help us all remember those of us who have answered the final call!
