I have just purchased a 1949 H. Drove it home fine. I just noticed that the transmission case has a 2" hole in the upper part of the case near where the battery plate mounts. This is on the top part of the case, near the front. Anyone know if this is cause for concern, other than water getting into the trans case? What could have caused this? Tractor runs good, have not checked the fluid level yet. Shifted fine when I drove it also. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help everyone. I just needed to know if it was cause for concern. When I have time I'll check to make sure everything is ok in that area. I'll probably just get a rubber oil fill cap off of something else for that place. Like I said it drove fine everything worked so I didn't think anything of it until I found the hole. This is my first post and you've all helped out a first time owner of a farmall.

It won't hurt anything as that part of the case is dry and houses the clutch and belly pump. I would cover it with something to keep out dirt and mice.

Maybe this will help, should have posted pic first time. This is from the battery side, left side of tractor as you sit in driver seat. Any ideas? See yellow arrow.

It almost looks like either the clutch let loose or something got caught between the clutch and the housing. The hole is right next to the clutch, right??

Could it possibly be where the control cable for an M&W or Heisler overdrive went through? I am just guessing.

My 41 H does not have that hole. My 53 Super H has a raised place in the casting at about that point, but it's not removable. The pipe for the belly pump is on the other side ---NEXT??

Does it have a belly pump? I'm wondering if the hole you are referring to isn't for the fill pipe of the belly pump...

Anyways, the transmission case where the oil is is behind where the battery mounts... The portion where the battery mounts is called the torque tube and there isn't anything in there other than driveshaft from the engine to transmission...
