I was wondering if there is a book that is published that tells all the makes and models of IH Farmall tractors that were made.

There has not been any one book printed yet that covers every IH tractor made. The books that Guy has produced along with the ones I have made only touch the "tip of the iceberg" as the saying goes.

The major variations of any one model can be staggering. I have found atleast 7 major variations of the 1206 and most people can only account for 2 or 3.

I'd like to see someone try to make a list of the various tractor models IH built, not only the USA ones, but those made in Germany, Australia, England and France to name a few of the "foriegn" counties IH had factories in. Anyone care to try this??

Bermuda Ken,

What is the seventh variation of the 1206? I come up with six. #1 Farmall 1206, #2 Farmall 1206 FWA, #3 International 1206, #4 International 1206 FWA, #5 International 21206, and #6 International 21206 FWA. If you consider with and without TA these six would be twelve but I don't remember the seven or fourteen.

There are atleast 5 different Farmall versions I can find. I won't list them here as they will be uncovered in an upcoming article on the 1206 in Red Power Magazine. The industrials have atleast 4 versions too!.

The differences in most of these are the early white model emblem decal vs later built gold emblem plate model. IH did make physical and mechanical differences between the two that are very apparrent.

The industrials (21206) have had several model emblem changes too.

You can't ever have too many books. But you can put Guy Fay's and Ken Updike's data books together and get a good snapshot of what IH did. For more detail, you need more books. Guy Fay's book covers up to about 1958 and is rather detailed as to specs. Ken Updikes is covers 1939-1985, and has less detail, but lists I believe all US made tractors, engine size, HP and weight. Guy's book lists more dimensions, both have years of production and serial numbers. Guy's is in the bookstores, you have to contact Ken directly for his.

Daryl: 150 Years of IH by C.H. Wendel gives not only every tractor built from the beginning until early 1980s but most of the equipment as well. There is also sections on crawlers and trucks as well as history of the company basically telling the companies that came together to form IH.

The book is hard cover and 415 pages of probably 75% photos. There are very few of the tractors missed in photos, probably less than 1% out of about three to four hundred models.

C.H. WENDEL ON IH(150 YRS); MUST BE OUT OF PRINT, BUT, MY NEIGHBOR HAS A HARDCOVER COPY AND IT IS EXCELLENT. PHOTO IMAGES, MODELS, FACTS ACROSS THE WHOLE LINE. MY FRIEND WAS WORKING IN A LOCAL FORD/IH REPAIR SHOP WHEN THE BIG STRIKE WENT DOWN.
WHAT A SHAME TO THE IH LEGACY. BULLDOZER, TRACTORS AND IMPLEMENTS THEY HAD THEM ALL.

Actually, Neither Wendel's book nor any of my books even comes close to all the models IH ever produced. There was a book proposal for me from MBI Publishing to do a book with each model of tractor, similar to Wendel's Crestline, but they backed out. When I was doing the research to see if it was feasible, I was up to somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 models.

Guy: I wont argue with that, actually what I did when responding to Daryl was count the pages of tractors in 150 Years of IH, and based on that did a guess. Figuring 5 to a page there is over 500 without the crawlers. Wendel also pays little attention to Cub Cadets, British, German, French and Austrailian production.

You say up to 800, do you think you were close to all with that? I expect volume of sales on tractor books would have a limiting effect, compared with some other subjects.

I probably put about 100 hours into seeing what kinds of numbers and photography was available- it was far from being a book, it was just seeing what the project would look like, and whether it was feasible. To answer Hugh's question, I'm pretty sure I'm within a hundred with that number, unless there were some factories I missed. I had pretty good data by then on the French, German, British, and Aussie models. There were a few Canadian models that a lot of folks miss. One worry was crawler variation- I'm not as solid on crawler knowledge as I should be. I think I got the totality of the models made in the Philipenes (basically German tractors assembled there with some interesting variations). I think I pretty much have the Saltillo works. Spain's a bit of a mystery, as is Brazil.

A good start is Guy Fay's INternational Harvester Tractor Data Book.... certainly a must for IH enthusiasts.. it has all the data up to the 650.
