Is it possible that diesel fuel that has been sitting in a fuel tank of an unused tractor will lose so much kick in five or more years that it causes the tractor not to start without ether?

Diesel ages just as gasoline does. I run a fuels testing lab and I have seen this time and again . We even run an accelerated stability test to determine how long it will last. With a stability additive it is good for about 2 years for engine use.

Wayne,

Are you sure that starter is spinning the engine fast enough? This is often overlooked when dealing with diesels.

The problem continues in that I can not restart the hot engine. If ether used when warm, the compression is too much for the starting motor. I seem to have no dark color to the exhaust, and any blowby seems to be clear. New injectors last week. Runs well in all rpm ranges. Will running at idle for an extended period do me any good? American Bosch fuel injection pump.

Still sounds like the starter is spinning the motor too slow. Especially if it won't restart when the motor's hot. Don't know what engine you've got but a typical tractor diesel has gotta be spun at 150 - 180 RPM in order to start.

Another possibility is low compression due to worn valves. While they may not be leaking, the valves may have worn and recessed into their seats enough to increase the chamber volume, thus lowering compression and causing hard starting.

I doubt it Wayne. Unlike gasoline, diesel fuel does not contain any significant light fraction that can evaporate or “go bad” after several years. However what CAN happen is algae can grow in the fuel and cause it to go “sour” if moisture (condensation) is present. Algae can then plug filters and cause pump/injector problems.

A recent experience: I acquired a Kenworth truck (Cummins 855 diesel) that had been sitting idle for 3 – 4 years with a half-filled tank. First I sampled the fuel and found no evidence of algae. Then after replacing the fuel filter and putting in fresh batteries we cranked it up. The diesel started immediately and ran fine on the old fuel.

In your case assuming the starter is spinning the engine fast enough, hard starting is probably caused by low compression.
