What in the WORLD can you do to get the float to shut the gas off after you shut the tractor down? I have two now that you have to adjust the gas going through the carb with the shutoff under the tank to keep them from dieseling. About the only thing it can be is the float isn't it? They both have new kits, have been cleaned, tight gaskets, etc, but you shut the tractors off and the gas just runs. I've heard the floats are real touchy about hanging up inside on the housing. Are there any secrets to keep this from happening? Thanks in advance, Harley

My M does the same thing, I just shut off the gas -- Next carb I do I'll try sealing the washers as George suggests. As to the dieseling, don't think that has anything to do with the carb. My M also diesels, which I attribute to excess carbon "hot spots" in one or more of the cylinders. I cut off the air when I shut it off by pulling out the choke. Going to get around to working on the engine someday--it's currently #3 on my list

You have touched on my biggest problem on carbs I rebuild. The most common fix is bending the float down which puts more pressure on the valve. Secondly as mentioned by others is dirty fuel. Uaually you can hear if the float is hanging up by rotating the carb in you hand. If it does not bang around I use a little white grease on the sides and put the halves together carefully and take back apart to find exactly where the float is rubbing.

First thing you do is realize the problem may not be the needle and fix the real problem. If the float isn't leaking and become heavy, seal the threads of the discharge nozzle and needle valve cage. Seal both sides of the red washers too. Anything leaking below the fuel level will seem to be the needle, but often isn't.

Too many guys get frustrated fixing what ain't broke and ignoring what is!

I have a M and an H. The H drips amd the M does not. I put a new kit in the H carb and it still drips. It bothered me at first but I just turn the fuel off after using the H. Most of the old tractors I have seen do the same thing and sometimes you just cant get some of them to quit dripping fuel. GOOD LUCK!

I've the same problem with both my 350U and 450. I found that if you retard the throttle all the way down before shutting it off, it'll stop the dieseling. AS far as gas leaking out of the carb - been there, done that 1.6 gazillion times. It's critical to install a new seat with a new needle, and get the float height right. That don't always solve it, but it'll help. On the 350, A rubber tipped needle solved the problem. Still looking for the trick to keep the 450 from spewing. If you're not concerned with 100% originality, put an inline fuel filter in the line to get the small gunk that makes needles sticky. Good luck!

Thanks guys. Gonna go down and tear one apart now and check everything again and see what I can see. I know the floats are good, but I will try the sealing trick and go again. Thanks to all, Harley
