My clutch seems to be almost on it's last leg. Is this something a basically mechanical guy could fix or is it a job better left to an "expert"? Also, is there only one fluid system for the hydraulics and transmission or is it two seperate systems? I'm still looking for a loader for this tractor, any resources? - Dave

You can do it if you have mechanical ability and patience.

I just finished doing the clutch on my 504. The hardest part is splitting the tractor and then getting it back together. Mine has a wide front end and it is easier to keep the front half from tipping over. I used bottle jacks on the front half and then moved the back half away with a floor jack. When putting it back together, we found the front end easier to move to the back half and did it that way.

I started the project because local dealerships wanted more than $1000 in labor to do just the clutch. I did more--I changed the crank seal, clutch, pressure plate, resurfaced the flywheel, changed the bearings and replaced the brake pads for about $450 in parts, plus my time.

I had never done anything like this and managed to get it all back together.

Splitting the tractor is the major part of the job, and can be complicated by all the hyd lines running to the rear of the tractor, but is doable, I had to do it. The tranny and hyd system is all one, the tranny case is the resevior. Loaders are available to fit, mine has a Bison VH500 on it. Also change the pilot bushing in the center of the flywheel while you have it apart.

Any good sources of info for this project? How many hours did you invest? Is it a one guy job? I have a third stall on my garage, but the wife may get upset looking at that thing all summer while oil drips on the floor. How do you post a picture with a reply?
