560 is hard to shift to neutral after hard pull...

Greetings... I can only hope someone out there has an idea of what's wrong with a 560 Gas Farmall. Whenever I stop after a mild to hard pull it's very difficult to almost impossible to get the transmission to shift into neutral even when the engine is turned off. The heavier the load the harder the shift to neutral until finally with a extremely hard pull it will not shift at all until the load is removed somehow. It's almost as if the clutch isn't releasing. Any other time the shifting seems just as one would expect. Any insight would certainly be appreciated. Note: The TA isn't functional. Thank you.

Hugh is right try pulling the TA lever to see if it doesn't release.

R. Smith: Even though your TA is out the short linkage between clutch and TA shafts must be kept adjusted. You adjust this as the manual indicates, it will help your problem.

I was pleasantly surprised to get feedback so quickly from Hugh and Jimmy. Thanks guys. If I may I'd like to add a couple things to the mix and see if you or anyone else has some other thoughts. You (Hugh and Jimmy) suggest that I make the adjustment between the engine clutch and the "torque amplifier clutch release shaft lever." One problem however... The adjustment clevis, etc is missing. I'm also questioning if the torque amplifier shaft should be as free as it is to move in any position. It's almost as if it isn't connected to anything inside the tractor housing. Or is that how it's supposed to be and I should replace the missing clevis and make the adjustments? I haven't a clue about this TA stuff. Can the whole torque unit be missing? and the tractor still function? Any more thoughts from you guys or anyone else would sure be appreciated. I'm clueless.

R. Smith: How much do you know on the history of this tractor? There is a shaft that can be installed in place of the TA unit. I have never seen one but it has come up here several times in discussions. I can't tell how to judge whether TA unit has been removed. All I have ever done to them is adjust linkage. On five TA equiped tractors totaling about 75,000 hours I only ever had one TA failure, and that was shipped off to dealer for repair. As such I have never seen the inside of one. There are lots of guys on here can tell you what to look for, and figure it out quite quickly.

However if one of those elimination shafts had been installed you should not be having the current problems, unless the main clutch has some problems with pilot bearing or clutch disc sticking on shaft.

Having said the above, if the TA shifting shaft is not connected to either TA lever or clutch shaft, it will have a fair bit of free travel even with the TA unit still in there. Is the TA shifting lever still connected to the TA shaft? If so did you try pulling back on TA lever when you push clutch pedal in as Jim suggested? That lever if adjusted will achive the same as if the short linkage between clutch shaft and TA shaft were connected. There is a chance all be it remote, that your TA may indeed still be functional. I think my first move would be get the linkage operational, then adjust as the manual describes. Someone in the past may have removed the linkage, thinking TA is trouble, and the best way to avoid trouble was unhook it. Just a shot in the dark.

Hugh, I've read through a few of the other question/answers dealing with other shifting problems and notice that you've helped others.
Good deal. If I understand it correctly, the torque shaft also physically disengages some sort of clutch in the TA unit? Since my shaft moves freely and only stops moving when the shaft lever hits on the tractor... Would any adjustment here do any good? Hardly seems to me as if it would but I've certainly been wrong before. Unless this short lever on the shaft is in the wrong position somehow?

R. Smith: I don't remember the exact adjustment proceedure on 560, however this is esentually what you do. You set free travel on the clutch pedal as per the manual instructions. Then with clutch pedal against deck, the short linkage between clutch shaft and TA shaft is set so it removes all free travel in TA shaft. When you depress clutch pedal you still have free travel on main clutch, and TA clutch starts to release imediately.

You could when this problem of shifting occurs, have someone standing by with a pipe wrench. While you are holding clutch down, have your friend step in and turn counter clockwise on the TA shaft. If that releases it you will have found the problem.

Thanks again Hugh. I guess I should have also mentioned that the TA lever is also missing so I couldn't do as suggested. I guess I'd hate to replace all the missing parts only to find out that there was another underlying problem like the pilot bearing you mentioned. I guess I could try to make/come up with the short adjustment lever on my own somehow and see if that helps. I noticed today that the shifting problem seems to exist after I back up without a load. Hmmmmm . I got this particular tractor at an auction and it was represented as not having a working TA. A combine engine had replaced the original. Other than that, I don't know much of anything.
