hello,
My grandfater gave me a 1960 B110 truck in good condition, but he 6 cyl gas has a busted rod. I want to repower it with a IHC diesel out of a small combine or tractor. Either a 4 or small 6 cylinder engine around 300 CID. have any of you guys done a conversion like this? What IH engine would be good to use and what tractor/combine to find it in. What do you guys think?

Thnaks,
Russ

Russ: It can't be too awfully difficult, I once sold a 560 with the 282 diesel with block busted. They went tractor pulling with it and installed 6 cylinder gas from an IH gas pickup. My understanding from what they told me,it was almost a bolt up. I know they weren't very long doing it.

If your thinking of a tractor diesel. I'm guessing you will have starter problems. Tractor's starters are on the transmission side of flywheel, pickups are on the engine side. Also make sure you have room for the oil filter.Another thing tractors use a wide flywheel with the ring gear back 41/2 in from the rear engine support. Pickups use a flat face flywheel with the ring gear directly above the clutch face ,the total flywheel is about an inch thick I've been doing some IH repowering, Iuse the IH 345V8. Right now I'm putting one in an M Put one in a 560 last winter.None of the problems you will run into can't be solved.

With a little swapping of external parts and maby motor mounts, a D-236, D-282 or D-301 six cylinder diesel will fit perfectly. 460, 560, 660, 656, 606, and early 706 tractors, 403, 503 combines, 422 cotton pickers to name a few places to look.

Would seem mating the tranny to it would one of the biggest challenges. Or ya could do what I did, those cummins motors in the dodges will outlive the truck in most cases,I picked up one of those with the 5 speed and put it in a `56 GMC 1-ton maybe i'll finish it someday..pretty easy swap,no wiring to speak of.
