I was thinking of a rebuilt kit. The parts book says the gas carb on a Farmall "H" is 5098l-DC. On the side of the bowl of the carb on my tractor I see the number 3212-D8. Am I looking at the right things?

I just rebuilt a gas/dist carb on my M and the needle and seat that came with the kit (from NAPA)fit, but the needle was longer and the seat had a bigger hole. It wouldn't run hardly at all until I put the old needle and seat back in. There obviously is some difference I guess.

The 3212 number is the casting number of the bowl. The model number of your carburetor is stamped on a small brass tag with a rivet in the center that is located on the top of the carb over the throttle stop (slow idle) screw. The last two letters after the part number are a revision number and not significant.

It appears that I have a carb originally made for distillate or kerosene. This makes sense as the tractor has the small extra tank for gas. Would you happen to know if the rebuilt kits are different? Has the carb just been readjusted for gas or have parts, such as jets, been replaced? Thank you for sharing your expertise.

I have 3 H carbs and all of them are gasoline only so I don't know if the kits are different. I don't expect much difference except for the idle jet and the main fuel nozzle. Passages in these two parts would have to be a bit larger for heavier fuels. Also, keep in mind that the distillate and the kerosene tractors started and ran on gasoline until warm. So, I maintain that if they will fit, they would work. I have purchased my carb kits at TSC and there was no designation for fuel type, although there were two kits. One was more complete than the other. Perhaps someone that has rebuilt a distillate carb will offer more information.
