SMTA How hard should it be to turn hydraulic gear?

I would like to know how hard it should be to turn the hydraulic gear with a 1/2 inch ratchet? I just changed the hydraulic hoses and I took the pump apart, the pump turns pretty easily until I tourque the plate bolts at 25 lbs behind the gear, then its really hard to turn. Is the pump just a good pump or should I put a gasket between the plate to take the pressure off of the gears inside the pump? I don't even need or use the hydraulics. Do you think that I could take out the little springs on the outside of the bearings?

As in the previous threads, if you're going to go to all the effort of making it look good, spend a little bit more time and make it work right, too. It'll make the tractor worth more when the time comes to sell it, and there won't be any mystery surprises for the next owner. Besides, the effect of removing parts at random from a mechanism designed to work with those parts intact is unknown, and finding out if the tractor will survive without them might cost more than just fixing it right in the first place!

If it turned easy when you took it apart, it should turn just as easily when you put it back together. Are you sure you're not missing some parts?

Kevin - The live pump on my SM can easily be turned by grabbing the pump/distributor drive gear and turning it with my fingers. If you need a wrench to turn the gear, something's wrong with the pump!

Sounds like perhaps one/both of the internal pump gears is a bit oversize and is being squeezed between the end plates when you tighten it down. If you're not gonna be using the hydraulics shimming the end plate out with an extra gasket (or two...) should do the trick.
