I have a '41 Farmall H with the original PTO design. Will the updated (spline engagement) design used on later models fit my tractor? I realize I will have to replace the transmission countershaft. Will I also have to replace the entire PTO assembly that goes from the transmission shaft to the rear of the tractor?

You can buy a splined bushing that will bring the old size up to current size.

Would you know when the design changed? I have a '44 H and don't know which it has.

According to my parts book there were 3. Serial number breaks were at 45164 and 118000. 1944 serials started with 150251.

I don't know, but it's only a few bolts to remove... the gasket probably needs to be replaced anyway, or it's a good way to wipe out the tranny if you should change the oil

I believe you will have to change the shaft in the tranny too, like you say.. you didn't mention what was wrong with the old one. The older ones had a square slot arrangement. I built up the on my '40 with weld, and remachines it. I never touched the tranny part, and it worked okay for light work.

The old one is the square slot arrangement you refer to. The first time the PTO quit, I pulled out the shaft and found it had already been built up before. The inner piece was in bad shape. I tore apart the tractor and had the inner piece on the tranny shaft built back up, put it back together, and now the inner piece is torn up again. I am using it to run a belly mower, so I'm sure it's loaded up pretty good. After this last encounter, I have already torn the whole tractor apart again, hoping to install the newer design, and make this the last time I have to fix it.
