I have a Stage I 53 Super H that the brakes on one side just don't seem to grip, the pedal has a lot of free play in it.

I have the opertaor manual and parts manual for it but I am told a service manual wasn't made for it.

I am looking for instructions on how to adjust and/or replace the brakes anyone have any info?

When you get the brakes off, inspect the splines on the shaft. most of them will be groved a little where the disks slide, touch up the edges with a file. I have had them when after replacing the balls and disc's still didn't have good brakes, then I take the covers and turn the mating edge down maybe 40 thousands, this makes up for the wear on them

Nadz, We chased ours around for a while, discs wer almost new, cleaned and lubed the balls and ramps, finally noticed that the brake shafts had grooves worn the into the teeth which didn't allow the discs to slide, they just hit the grooves and tipped. I have never seen this before, but the tractor was a loader tractor for it's whole life before we got it, so I imagine there was alot of heavy duty brake turning going on(no power steering). We got a udes seyt of shafts with no wear from a parted out 300. Pete

Those disk brakes are pretty simple. To adjust simply loosen the locknut then tighten the actuating bolt at the bottom of the brake pedal (right side) or the brake cross shaft (left side). Tighten the bolt until you’ve got about 1” to 1-1/2” of free play at each pedal, and both pedals push down the same amount.

More than likely however the disks have worn out, become oil-soaked or both. They are easy to remove/replace. Simply remove the actuating bolt, take out 5 bolts holding the brake cover to the transmission and pull the cover off. The outer disk will then pull right of the spline. Then pull out the center plate assembly, then the inner disk. If there’s any question about the condition of the disks, simply replace them with new. Figure $90 - $100 for a full set of 4 disks.

If you find any oil inside the brake, now is the time to on replace the spline shaft seal. The seal is easily (and inexpensively…) replaced without going inside the transmission.

Good luck!
