r4etired is exactly right! You're more likley to be struck by lighting than to find parts for steering boxes. Good used parts are almost nonexistant and rebuilt boxes are way too expensive! If box has any adjustment left, then 1/8 of a turn of play in steering box is acceptable. Any more than that probably means gears are worn. I'm not including looseness in drag links, spindles or wheeel bearings. While rocking str. whl. back & forth, watch both str. arms on sides of gear box to determine total play in box. The left side arm will have less play than right. This is because it drives the right. This is why I reccomend watching both arms(from tractor seat). T/A's can be a weak point, also. Otherwise these are good tractors, good power to weight ratio and very reliable.

300U in good workable condition, no major leaks or smoke, rear tires 50% or more, good 2-pt., good complete sheetmetal. Around here, 2000.More if it has good working T/A and independent pto. Add probably 500 if it has power steering.

I use IH utility's if I were looking at a 300 utility the first thing I would look at would be the steering box.parts are available to fix almost everthing else on the tractor. Here a good one would bring 3000
