I know this has been covered meany times but cant find the answers looking back at the post. I just picked up a live hydralic pump from a super M. If I am correct I need to change the front cover in order for this to work right? The drive gear was not on this pump so I am wondering if the drive gear for the mag is the same? Also how hard is it to find a manifold for this pump? Can I take a steel line set that was used on a 400 and cut them to put compression fitting for the soft lines to attach?

Paul I have collected parts to do the same conversion on an early M. Have not done it yet but have searched old archives for info and advice. The plate between the front cover and block will need to match (3 holes match and one is about 1/2 hole off so some posts claimed to drill plate, fill & re-tap cover). I am going to replace plate, cover, and gears. The pump and cam gear is the same fit, but the ones that came out with the SM, 400 & 450 were made of stronger material, so there were posts of gears sometimes breaking with this conversion when gears are not changed. I found this link to pix of timing gear repair by Bob M VERY helpful to get me ready to do this job.

The manifold I got with SM pump has one compression fitting and one line requires a clamp, but manifold has a hump. The 400 that I have seen has the same manifold with short soft lines between it and the steel lines. One about 4" long with clamps. The other about a foot long made on the smaller metal line with a compression end.
Good luck_hope this helps

M engine # 228082 up pump will bolt to cover, some covers need the hour meter drive gear snout on pump shaft sawed off to go all the way in.Engines below above # have different bolt pattern than pump on front cover. Drive gear will work.400 pipes can be made to work.
