I have a Farmall M that the starter will not turn over all even if jumped from the battery.

I took the starter out and replaced it, I also checked the starter when it was out of the tractor
and the start works on the bench.

When you tuch the starter bolt with a jumper cable you can here it click but it will not crank the engine.

And the Jumper Cable gets pretty hot.

Any ideas of what I could check.

Thanks

Pete

Make sure your ground to the tractor from the battery is really good. Put jumper cable on starter housing and the other end on battery ground terminal, then try starting tractor. This is the best ground you can get. Just had the same problem with my truck. A little cleaning of connections solved the problem.

Usually when a cable/clamp gets hot, there is a bad connection or a short. Be sure the engine is not locked up and not in gear. Check and clean 'each' connection from battery to switch to starter, and the ground. I have pulled a starter and it spun on the bench but still couldn't turn the engine, when means it needed a rebuild. Your flywheel could be boogered up causing the bendix to bind or stick, also.
