Hello, I would like to restore a IH tractor,I have a chance buy a little A for $450.00. It is in fair shape but the motor needs work done to it.[water in the oil] I would like to know they are to work on and can I still get parts from IH or jobbers. this would be my first IH and it would be fun to restore but I dont want to get stuck with something I cant get parts for. Thanks in advance. ----- - Harold

Harold, You are in luck. The Farmall A is one of the most restorable of the older Farmalls. Engine rebuilds are no problem as there are a multitude of places including your Case IH dealer that can paractically have you up and running in no time, as long as you are willing to do the work of course. There are also numerous aftermarket sources for many of the other things you need for a complete restoration, not to mention a lot of bone yaeards specializing in used parts. As mentioned, E-Bay is another source, but you have to be careful or you can pay far more than you would ordinarily. Its like restoring a 57 Chevy, If you have the skeleton, you can build the car, in your case the tractor. Good luck in your restoration, and dont become too anxious to bring it to completion, as the adventure of searching for the parts is much of the fun. Ask questions here on this forum, and you can learn a lot of exactly what is unique to your particular year of tractor. By the way, You'll have a fraction of the investment in restoring a Farmall A than you would a 57 Chevy.

I am currently restoring a 1946 A and I knew nothing about engines, tractors or bodywork before I started. So far I have replaced all oil seals, pistons and sleeves, cleaned the ancient gooey oil from all parts, hammered out dents and applied filler. This summer I will paint her myself. The only part that I have not been able to find easily was the felt piece that goes between the left fender and the transmission case, but I bought some felt from McMaster-Carr and made one myself. Bearings, gaskets and seals were purchased from the local CaseIH dealer and reproduction parts were bought from catalogs. There are a lot of used parts for the A on eBay and Wengers.Go ahead and get a full engine gasket kit. You need to go to Red Power in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, this summer.

Yep, I agree with the other posts. Some parts can be had from auto parts stores; salvage yards, ebay, OEM Tractor Parts web site and similar sites, and IH dealers. Lacking a local dealer, I ordered parts from Whites Farm Supply in New York (great service, by the way). I had about $50 of odds and ends - seals, etc. - and they had everything in stock. Ordered on Monday, got it in the mail on Wednesday. But then there are a lot of Farmalls still in service, so parts will be available.
Finished my A last year, now working on a Super C.
Good luck!
Bill

If you have water in the oil you will probably have to pop out sleeves and install new O rings on bottom of sleeves. Not a tough job. Good little tractor. Great site for info.If you can't find the info on this site it don't exist. Bill

Parts are easier to get now than 15 years ago. I have three A's and there has never been a necessary part that I could not get from IH. E-bay has been a "god-send" for finding the obscure options/pricer parts or original manuals. The after market suppliers are florishing. I have had everything required for a complete o/h in less than 24 hours. Snap that little tractor up and go with it! You'll have a ball!

I have a Super A and I've been able to get most of the parts straight from the dealer. Others you can get from NAPA and similar parts places, also there are a lot of suppliers on the net now. They are pretty good to work on, like everything there are a few things that will take a while, but nothing impossible. You've probably already found (this website) the best source of information for these tractors. Hope this helps, SAm in NS
