my coil died after five or six years of use. i took the bad one off and went to the local part store. i told him it was a 6 v cub. he told me (and showed me) that it is a 12v coil. he said there had to be some kind of inline resister going to the distributer. i dont have one. so i took the new 6v coil he had and it works fine. what happened, what am i missing, why will both coils work on a 6v system ?

Chad:

Phil answered quite succinctly. Most Cubs are 6v. As for coils a good universal external replacement is from Napa or any of the other auto parts stores - UC12 is the model number.

Eiter coil will work, but the 12V coil won't put out as hot a spark as the 6V one will if used on a 6V system. Since the older Cubs were 6V, there would be no resistor in series with the coil primary side.
