I have an IH 364 diesel - just bought it and don't yet have a manual. If you do can you tell me:
1) what type fluid to use in the trans/diff
2) how much it holds

Greg,

There should be a drain plug directly under the PTO shaft, at least there is on the B-275. This area usually gets covered with crud so it may be hard to see. I use the Traveler brand 80W-90 oil from TSC in the transmission/differential. I know its not a premium brand but it's probably better than anything that was available when the tractor was new in 1959.

I also use the Traveler Universal Hydraulic Fluid in the hydraulic system. It is 20 weight non-detergent oil which is exactly what the manual requires.

Thanks for your help. I didn't think to look in the very rear for the drain plug. I was under the tractor and never saw anything like it. Glad I asked this forum. Did your B275 hold about 6 gallons in the rear/diff as someone here suggests? Approx. how much did the hydraulic system hold?

Greg, it should take 80-90 gear oil, about 6 gallons. There is a level plug on the side of the transmission case under one of the foot boards, the left I think.

Thanks parts man. I found the level plug, it is just where you describe. The fill plug is up right by the shifter. I only find 2 drain plugs and they are close together (about 8-10" apart) right below the area of the shifters. It bothers me that the rear differential housing is lower than either of these 2 drain plugs and I can't find any other drain plug for it. I looked real good, even looked to see if it was hidden by my drawbar but I just don't find one. Surely there is a way to completely drain the diff isn't there? I don't have a GSS1442 Chassis Manual for this 364 yet but I sure would like to know how to drain that diff all the way. You have any ideas or know someone who has the manual that could tell me?

The plug is at the rear of the diff house way down low at center below the PTO output.

Like LEE and Rick said, the drain is under the PTO shaft, just above the swinging drawbar. It is horizontal and hides easily. Make sure you pull all 3 plugs as they will have water in the case from condensation.

Thanks partsman and lee, I am not looking at the tractor right now but I'm sure I'll be able to locate that rear drain plug with your description. I bet there will be some ugly crud come out when it's drained. I checked it at the level plug this past weekend and it's not low or too full but I sure will feel better draining it and installing new fluid. Thanks again for your help.
