Super A alternator belt

Howdy, all.

My Super A has a Delco 10si alternator on it that is wired correctly (checked and double checked about a dozen times), but doesn't have any output. I've had it put up on a tester and it showed an output there. I believe the belt is just too loose and is not spinning it up fast enough. (To give you an idea, you can press the two sides of the belt together at the middle pretty easily.) It cannot be tightened any further without the alternator being in the way of the front cultivator lift arm. I went to replace the belt, which was a 27" one, with a 24" one, but that won't fit over the fan. I'm going to try a 26" belt but i'm not sure it'll be tight enough. Any advice? I know I'm not the only guy out here who has had to monkey with a 12-volt-converted Super A.

Thanks in advance,
Darren

Darren: I think you should be able to get the shorter belt on there. Just put it over the fan one blade at a time. I have alternators on all 3 of my tractors and the belt is short enough that I can mount the cultivators on any one of them. Without some kind of assist you will have trouble with the alternator exciting. Like scotty said, don't get that belt too tight.

Darren, You should be able to go to your NAPA dealer and get the belt that you need. Also I have heard some guys try a smaller diameter pulley to get that alternator to spin faster. But remember not to overtighten that fan belt or you will burn out your fan spindle bearings. Keep oil in that hub!
