Farmall M Manifold Questions

Will a H manifold fit on an M? Here is the situation: I have a small crack in the intake side of my M's manifold near #3 cylinder intake just after the square portion of the manifold. Problems are: I can't get #3 to fire and have replaced plug and have spark (maybe a wee bit weak), new #3 plug is wet no firing indicated at all, tractor starts easily and runs but need to run on nearly full choke, #4 cylinder was not hitting so I replace plug and it fixed problem but I noticed that I had carbon build up very soon after (running to rich?), can't seem to get much adjustment from the high or low speed screws on carb (both in all way then back out 1 1/2 - 2 turns), carb was dismantled and socked in cleaner for a day, did a quick compression test before I bought the tractor and thought all cylinders were near 100 psi (I will run another check soon to verify variation b/w cylinders). Do you think that the crack is responsible for all the problems or could there be other problems (carborator? or ignition?) that I should check first?

Thanks
Tim

The M manifold is considerably larger (longer) than the H - no way they will interchange.

The crack in the intake manifold can indeed affect operation of both #3 and #4 cylinders since both share the same manifold runner. A leak there can cause symptoms somewhat consistant with what you describe. And there's no point in messing further with the carburetor until the leak is eliminated.

If you can get at the cracked area you might try temporarily patching it by wrapping with electrical tape, or by buttering it with silicone gasket maker or JB Weld to verify that's the problem.

Bob M,

Thanks for the comments -- I should have figured the M's manifold would be longer. I can get to the crack and if JB weld or some such would hold long enough it would be good to verify that its the primary problem.

What do you know about welding the manifold -- I have brazed some cast iron before and they make electric arc welding rods for cast iron? Don't know what polarity is best for welding on cast or how well the electric arc rods work?

Thanks again

Depending on the location and the quality of your work, JB Weld could fix your manifold indefinitely. For the cost it's certainly worth a try.

Welding cast iron is kinda fussy, but there's welders out there who are pretty good at it (I'm not one of 'em!). It also may be possible to braze the crack shut. You might post you welding question over on Tool Talk - there's couple regulars there who know their welding stuff.

Worst case scenario is to simply buy a new manifold. Last M manifold I got was $130 or so.

I've had the best luck welding cast w/ oxyacetylene, just vee the jount out, preheat, weld and postheat. Buy the cast iron filler rod.

According to the parts manuals they are different. For an H gas it is part number 8033CCX while the M is 8035DDX. The H is a 152 CID while the M is 164 CID. I would guess that the manifold for the M is going to be longer than the H's.
