What do I do? It looks like the steering runs thru the top of the radiator. . . Do I need to disconnect it? what else? Thanks

Some of the early Ms do not have holes in bolster to access radiator bolts. Makes getting bolts out a little more fun.

well read all the posted tips and you should have it figured out but you might want to take pipe and cap out of bottom of radiator and let drain in a bucket before you pull hoses might not have near the mess.

Yes the steering shaft has to be removed. Unscrew the large plug at the top of the upper bolster. Loosen the clamp at the u-joint by the gauges and screw the shaft out through the front of the upper bolster. Disconnect the upper radiator support bar and upper radiator hose. Loosen the clamps on the bottom radiator hose. Take the fan shroud off. Remove the cotter keys and castellated nuts from the two studs in the bottom of the radiator that go through the base of the bolster. Pull the radiator up and away from the fan blade.

Can't recommend strongly enough that you invest in a service manual!!! A Parts manual is just as valuable as well as an Operators Manual.

glad to know that we aren't the only ones that had this problem. However what do they mean by bolster??? The frame piece on the side??? If you can't get the worm gear out take a pipe wrench gently to the steering shaft and turn the shaft and bearing out. good luck.

I don't remember having much grief with removal of the radiator, you do have to take that big hex nut off the upper bolster, and remove the steering wheel shaft out first, take off the hoses, and unscrew it from the bottom and wallah!!!

One more step I recommend, soak the bottom bolts with a good penetrating oil a couple of times before you try to remove them, it is a real pain to make a plate and braze the bolts on and solder it to the lower tank. Been there.
