Broken H

Disaster. I was making the turn about an hour into plowing this evening, I heard a muffled "snap" and my '41 H really began to shake a lot. My gut tells me it's a broken rod or something of that magnitude. I'm not a collector, restorer or even mechanically gifted. I'm also the opposite of rich. My first thoughts are; (1) do I try to find or borrow $1000 and buy a neighbor's 1953 Massey; or (2) Locate the local talented mechanic and pay him to fix the H; or (3) attempt this myself and hopefully get it running in a month? Any opinions are appreciated.

Does the tractor still run and have oil pressure ? If it were a problem with a rod, most likely you would have zero oil pressure, in addition to a horrible clanking noise.

If the shaking doesn't stop when you push in the clutch, try pulling off the plug wires, one at a time (use insulated pliers and gloves) and see if it is one cylinder that is not working.

It could be something simple. My H shook like it had a dead cylinder. After pulling the plug wires didn't make any difference, I noticed that one of the fan blades had broken off.

The H is an easy tractor to work on. Get yourself a set of manuals, IT and IH, and a parts book. The manuals will tell you how to do almost everything. The parts book will show you all the parts and give you an idea of how they go together. The rest, you can ask about here. This site is one of the most focused search engines for IH that I have ever seen.

I appreciate the advice. I immediately tried the clutch test and that wasn't it. I then bought four new plugs to try to eliminate that possibilty and just like you, one of the fan blades had broken off. Now it is just a problem of getting a new fan and figuring out how to install (and hopefully I can do it without pulling the radiator.

Paul,

I think Dave is one the right track.

Does it only shake when the clutch is engaged? If so, sounds like the tranny coupler. Easy fix.

Paul try to fix it yourself even if you are not to mechanicaly inclined. These tractors are fairly simple to work on. One of the first things I would check are the bolts in the coupleing between the clutch shaft and the input shaft of the transmission, the bolts and the flanges can get worn and if one or the other breaks it will let the clutch shaft run off center and make it shake with the clutch engaged.
good luck

Paul, The fact that you are using a Farmall H tells me that you are indeed at least a little mechanically gifted. I have a 52 H that is presently in my garage, my basement, and a few other rooms. Before tearing this tractor apart, I knew very little about it. With the number of fine folks who frequent this site, it is extremely unlikely that nobody would be able to help you repair your H in less than a month. I'll bet you will be out plowing with the H again very soon. Be sure to ask any questions you may have right here...you will get tons of help on this site. Besides, I have never had any luck trying to find or borrow a grand.

Paul, I'd first find out exactly what is wrong with your tractor, and if at all possible try to fix it. There is no guarantee that by buying the neighbors MF that it wont break down in some way, and if whatever is wrong with your tractor can be repaired and you can do the labor, you will accomplish a couple things. First become more adept at fixing mechanical problems, and have your tractor worth more than fence row sculpturing. I believe its worth a try. Besides, you can't be depending on a neighbor having a tractor or other piece of equipment every time you have a break down.
