What is the best way to clean the bottom of the crank and inside the engine block? I have the oil pan dropped and there is alot of junk in there that should be cleaned out. What should I not clean with? Should I run the engine with ATF of is that a bad thing?

Remove the plate on the right side of the block, and remove the valve cover, rocker arms and push rods. You can then squirt the product of your choice on everything. When done get rid of what ever you used with engine oil. I usually do this with the head off, if I'm having the head redone.

If you have an air compressor and a siphon gun you could spray diesel fuel or kerosene into the area and it will do a good job of cleaning. If you don't have a compressor get a brush, paint or straight handle cleaning brush and with kerosene start swabing it out. Put on some safety glasses and set to the side and plan to get plenty of kerosene on your arms. Since your dirt and gunk is already in the pan you should just get it out while the pan is off. Once you have done this you may want to use a small amount of transmission oil or Marvel Mystery oil as a cleaner mixed with the oil and change your filters often for a while.

ATF would be an option. I have used kerosene and a blow gun. Also plain old water on a hot day can wash out a lot of junk. Now get me right, I am talking about spraying with high pressure garden hose with the pan off. Don't try to run with water in the pan in place of oil.

Oh come on Cowman, I think you might be on to something here. Look how much cheaper water would be than oil, and when it comes time to change, you don't have that nasty environmental waste to get rid of. Let's do some think ing about this before we get too hasty. Maybe with somebody elses tractor, just to give them the first chance of coarse. Harley
