On my Super C,When I open the throttle,it begins to hunt(as I call it) for the the right RPM.I read that this could be from the governor not set right but I tried to set it as the manual said.My questions, what can be the problem and how can I fix it??

Dale, When does it hunt? If it's sitting and idling, or just driving down the road and hunting, my guess would be either a carb, or a likneage problem...this means your governor is functioning, but something is making it work when it shouldn't, or the engine is using the governor to keep it from stalling. If you get rapid fluctuation when you rev it up to high RPM, mutch mor rapid than what I would call hunting, then like Gary said; your bumper spring is probably at least out of adjustment, or more than likely rusted and broken. Take the acorn nut off, and remove the spring, clean the tube that it sits in out (there will most likely be alot of rust and maybe even moisture in there.)
Then if the spring is not broken, lube things up, and put the spring back in, just keep tightening and testing; when you can rev it up to full quickly without getting it bouncing, you have it right. Like Gary said, Cs and Super C's are known for this problem...just replaced one on one of our Super Cs recently. Good luck, Pete

I've recently had this problem with my Super A and a new set of springs for the governor fixed my problems. After 50 odd years they get broken or rusty or weak so it might be worth replacing them while your at it. Also, I believe there are a couple of bushings in the governor housing that wear over time giving excessive play and you may want to check them. Hope this helps, SAm in NS

Dale,
You said you tried to set it as the manual said.
What manual are you speaking of?
On the bottom of the governor there is an acorn shaped nut that covers the "bumper spring" adjustment screw.
If you can turn this spring "in" a little, to tighten the spring, it might solve your problem. The bumper spring is located at a "low point" that over the years could collect moisture and cause the spring to rust, or it could be broken.
The spring "is available" and I got mine from Carter & Gruenewald for about 3 bucks or you could try to clean yours up.
Of course, there are several other things that can cause your problem.
How much wear in your linkage to the carb? etc.

Hope this helps !

Gary

Gary the manual I have is the I.T. manual. What would happen if I tightened the spring too much?? As far the carb.yes it is worn and idles at a high rpm but even at this,my problem is the same at all speeds when ever I accelerate.

I think that if you tighten the bumper too much, you will increase your idle speed and adjusting the carb won't help. The governor is opening up the idle. If that is the case and the rpm is still flucuating, sounds like a broken spring in the governor.
Maybe Gary can give us some more help.

Good luck,
Bill
