I have disassembled and cleaned the oil pump and am wondering what to do about the gasket both that seperates the oil pump and the oil pan gasket. Can these be bought or do I make them out of gasket material? Also, how do you prime the oil pump to ensure it works upon start up?

I know you can get the oil pan gasket individually from many auto part stores like a NAPA or PepBoys. The oil pump base gasket is usually found in the complete gasket kit from the aftermarket folks, or might be available individually as well. I would think the dealer would be your best bet to order just the individual piece. Also make sure you machine that base surface flat before you put it back together. That base warping is a common cause of oil pressure loss. You often see the gasket blown out between the bolts. If you are having pressure problems and you have the pan down, check the crankshaft while you are there, just make sure that you don't accidently swap main or rod cap positions! I've traced 3 pressure problems on tractors back to a PO not paying attention, or not knowing it was important.

Your best bet is to purchase both gaskets. The oil pump cover gasket is literally paper thin. If you make your own and it is too thick, the oil pump will not develop full pressure.

Both gaskets are inexpensive and readily available at your C-IH dealer or by mail order (Carter & Grunenwald, etc).

For priming the pump just dump several tablespoons of fresh motor oil into the pump inlet before installing the pickup float. Then turn the pump shaft a few revolutions to spread the oil around before remounting the pump.

you can get the pan gasket from your dealer. ask him about the pump. I'm not sure it uses a agasket. there is no need to prime the pump.
