Got a 1466 in the shop and has very little power steering. Im a Deere mechanic and not used to these tractors. Everything else works fine torque, brakes, three point ect.just very weak steering. I was told to pull out the valve on the bottom of the housing on the left side tractor. I did that and the oring was good. and valve looked good. If anybody has any ideas on the problem I would be glad to hear them. Thanks in advance.

If the rest of the hydraulic circuits operate correctly the pump is not the problem. The power steering has priority over everything else so it gets the first oil by way of an orfice. The rest of the oil is bypassed through a flow divider valve which might be stuck open which will lower your steering pressure from 2200 PSI to about 250 PSI.Check also to see if the piston seal in the steering cylinder is leaking.Another problem that causes hard steering is a dry bushing just below the steering wheel on tilt steering tractors. However the biggest problem on those tractors is not hydraulic but worn and dry bushings and thrust bearings in the front spindles. If the hydraulic system is building pressure in the steering system you can hear the steering relief valve squeal when you turn the steering wheel all the way to the stop and hold it there.I hope that helps you.

We used to drill out the steering orfice at the flow divider one size at a time until the steering was sufficient. Also might check and see if the gear on the MCV pump has come loose.

There is a pump on the backside of the valve plate where you are checking (the MCV valve).

Removing the valve body gives you access to the hydraulic pump for the TA and steering. These are prone to wear.

The pressure and flow can be checked with a Flow-Rater to see if it's necessary to tear into it. I have the specs., but not at hand tonight. If no one else posts, I could post them tomorrow.

No flames, please, but if you're used to Deere power steering, you're gonna have to tune up the IH steering darn good to be happy with it!
