The rear wheel clamps on my H work themselves loose once in a while. Today I see that the head has popped off one of the bolts. Does anyone know why they loosen up, or have a good way to keep them tight ?

river, I'm with Hugh on this one, chances are someone changed the bolts, and used coarse threaded replacements...there just isn't enoug grooves to allow proper tightening in this application. I have gotten many an old Red one with this ailment.

Thread has to be the same in both the bolts and the clamp.

CNKS: My thoughts much like yours. Those forged steel U clamps are fine thread. It would be quite hard to cut a new coarse thread in those.

I remember replacing a few of those bolts over the years. My memory is slipping on this, but I expect they were a grade 8 bolt when new, right or wrong? My thoughts were that someone has changed these to a lower grade fine thread bolt, rather than what Pete is suggesting. Pete I am not suggesting the change to coarse thread couldn't be done, but I don't think I will tackle it.

That's one problem with IH's "dot head" bolts -- no way to tell the strength. Without even thinking about it, when I "restored" my C I replaced the corroded axle bolts with grade 5's. Perhaps I should replace them with 8's.

These clamps have coarse thread bolts in them, and I think that the broken bolt was softer than a grade 5. At least it was easy to scratch with a pocket knife.

riverbend: Did you ever try putting in new bolts? Be rather careful, as those tractors will shear the key in the wheel. My dad's 300 did that the week was new. Dealer had changed the wheels from dish in to dish out and I expect someone forgot to tighten the clamps as tight as they should be. You can put quite hefty torque on those as they are fine thread. I have used 3/4 drive with about 4' pipe on the handle.

Could it be that someone has changed those bolts? I expect they were a grade eight bolt when new.

the half moon should not carry any weight during tightining.wheel off ground and half moon down. make sure to tighten evenly side to side as well as front to rear. check several times anytime you reset the wheels. we used ours for plowing, cultivating and a #24 mtd picker, this required setting the wheels for each application. tightining several times a day for a couple days should take care of any problems.
