I am not a mechanic but what I would do is first mark the roter to where it is in relation to which cylinder it it on then mark the mag ( on top where it bolts to the tractor) so you know where the correct mag timing position is. Next, take the mag off, mark the grove on the mag to the mag housing then mark the other grove end that is still in the tractor to the housing. In theory everything should line up when assembling. The part that I am not sure of is there is a bushing that has to be replaced then correctly reamed to the drive shaft.

If you want to fix your magneto, then I would suggest clicking the link below. Go to the Blue Ribbon Service Manuals and click on the GSS-5035 Service Manual - Magnetos.

This publication deals with just about all of the IH magnetos.

Hope this helps

"I can't time my M because the coupling is loose"

I think you answered your own question. Fix the coupling.

you have to fix the coupling. It has a spring in it that is designed to hold and trip to spin the mag a low rpms for hand starting. it sounds like maybe the spring is broke in yours.

do you mean the impulse spring? the one in this mag needs to be replaced because you can barely feel or hear it snap. i took a good mag off of another tractor and thats when i found that the coulpling that attaches to the timing gear had play in it. i am just trying to make sure that this is something that will affect performance because its a lot of work to take that gear assembly out and put it back in. thanks for the help

are you talking about the front half of the coupling that stays on the tractor when you take the mag off? there should be no play there. email me if you want my phone number

Yes, its the part that stays on the tractor that i am talking about. i was pretty sure that it shouldn't move but the tractor runs fair and i have tried stuff in the carb and whatnot but nothing seems to help it. i was wondering if this play in the coupling might be something to smooth it out. if its not likely to make a difference i don't want to go through all the trouble of taking the whole front of the tractor off to fix it. i appreciate your help.

you might not have to take the whole front of the tractor off. the mag drive comes off as a seperarte piece.

I think where i will run into trouble is when i have to put it back on. i can't think of any way to put the whole thing back in and have it timed right without taking the front cover off.

yes you can. you just do it by trial and error.
