I have to replace the bearings in the top shaft in the transmission. I need to split the tractor between the torque tube and the transmission.
Do you have to disconnect the drive shaft from the clutch or will it slide out with the transmision when you split them. The only way I see to take the bolts out is small gap where the clutch rod goes and that might be a chore. Any help will be appreciated. Rodney

I had to split one of my C's a couple of years ago to put a new seal in the front of the transmission. When you split it at the front of the transmission it just pulls apart. The drive shaft just slides into the clutch assembly. With it split I was able to get to the front of the transmission with no problems. Safety is a key element here. Be sure to block and brace everything. My brother had a splitting stand that they use on a 1466 that we were able to modify and bolt to the front half of the tractor. I have narrow front ends so it is even more important to brace the front part. The back half we jacked up with a floor jack. One person could do it but two was very handy. Safety! Safety! Safety!

When you split it at the front of the tranny and move it 4in or so then you can disconnect the drive shaft at the u-joint. Those bolts are tapered and after the nuts are removed you can release the joint. I use a big piece of brass to bust the joint loose.

Thanks guys for all your help. I split the tractor last night and it went just as you said. I built some angle iron stands and bolted to the tractor and it came apart like a dream. The drive shaft was no problem and slid right out. I now have to disassemble the transmission to put new bearing in the top shaft. It has about 1/16" slop in the bearings so I hope the shaft is ok. As a note I do have the manual you suggest but the information was very general and had no details about splitting the tractor and the shaft in question. Again thanks for all your help.
