It seems that my M may possibly have different points that they usually came with. The manual I just paid $30? (Binder books) for doesn't even mention anything other than the magneto version. The old IH dealer 50 miles away gave me the wrong points (part # 353172R91 - apparently is for the magneto versions).

Anyway, before I order another tune up kit, could someone give me the part number for these points and/or kit that works with the 49 battery ignition M that came with a one piece point set? The points I have on my M is a one piece unit that slides down over the adjustment screw (uses offset head to adjust point gap) instead of the two piece points set that I bought from the guy. The part I bought has the arm with a separate piece for adjustment of the gap. The unit I have on my M is a one piece unit with one hole in the base for the non-removable adjustment screw to slide into and another hole farther out for the removable set screw.

Hopefully this is a clear enough explanation of what I have on the M and what I bought (I'll sell it cheap if anyone wants it for their magneto M IHTK1-H points:353172R91, condenser: 353903R92, rotor: 353896R91, spark plugs: AL388).

Yeah, I should have taken it off and saw what it looked like before I went down there...

The distributor looks like it came on the M (looks like original red paint on it). It has a 90' bend/vertical cap. Everything else on this M is Delco Remy and I'm about 99% sure the distributor is also. I changed the coil to a 12v today and replaced the push/pull switch (it was the culprit) and it fired up today after a few tries but needs new points, condensor, and plug wires.

A couple other questions I'll post here in hopes that you guys will see this thread...

(1)I assume that the throttle lever all the way back is idle, right? (2)After it cranked up today, it idled pretty high or at least it seemed to. Could this be caused by the shaft from the gov to carb being turned 180'? when it was installed after reinstalling the carb? When I pushed the lever forward, at some point it idled down... (3)Whats the shift layout on the M? (it would be nice to know so I don't go through the back of the barn in high gear) (4)It seemed to only want to crank when it was almost fully choked. I never really let it warm up much and after I cut it off it spit out a lot of gas out the air intake on the carb (had the air cleaner off cleaning it up) (5)One last thing... I noticed a few random sparks coming from the exhaust manifold while it was running (muffler was off cause its in a barn with low ceiling). Is this normal? The engine sounded strong anyway.

Bill, you hit the nail on the head... I went to napa's website and pulled the image up and that looks exactly like it. You don't happen to have any more info on this distributor do you? Like the cap number and spark plug wires that would go with it. Thanks a million.

Jamie, the cap number is rr145 the dust cover is rr164. wire set is Beldon 700172 or maybe 700176 I am trying by memory as I use to work at a napa, There is no listing in the napa cataloge for the IH h or m with the delco dist.( how I remember is that the points are the sames as what was called for a oliver 77) even tho the oliver was a six cylinder it used the same type of points, on the wires make sure they are true wire and not the newer style. Please take the old cap with you as my memory may be wrong. If you look really close inside the cap the part number will be molded in it if its a cap made by standard. ( need a very good set of eyes to see it)Good luck Bill

I would agree with previous posts, the 2 piece type are the same I have in my SMTA and think they are the same as M or SM. I would get brand and numbers off of your distributor and take them to NAPA or other parts dealer to match up.

Like gene b said you probaly have aftermarket distribitor they are very common. If it is Delco it will have 90 degree bend with vertical cap not sure about Prestolite. Points and condenser are available for either one. Bermuda Ken at Carter & Gruenwald can help you figure out what you have and supply correct part.

According to my parts manual these are the correct part numbers for an M. It is possible that somebody did some replacing of parts in the past. You may need to take your parts to the parts store and compare to get whatever looks like yours. It is also possible that the parts that are in there are not the correct ones.

Do you have a DELCO-REMY or PRESTOLITE dist. Any parts house can get the rite ones for you just have to know which system you have.
