OIL PRESSURE ON F-20

I have a 1939 F-20 that I just got running after it had sat for a few years in a barn. I have run it off and on since getting it started the first time. Today I noticed that the oil pressure gauge was topped out while it was running. The gauge then slowly dropped back down after the engine was shut off. Would the problem be the gauge or is there something else I should checkout? Also Can anyone tell me how to set the carburetor after rebuilding it? I have the engine running, but it only runs for maybe three minutes before it begins to sputter and dies. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike, Before you run it again, take the oil lines off and make sure they are all open. Otherwise, critical bearings may not be getting oil. A plugged oil line could explain why the oil pressure is so high. Also, hook a air line to the "Oil Distributor" in the crank case, take the side openings off and confirm that all four holes of the distributor are open. I burned out a bearing on a F-20 when one of the distributor holed was plugged and the splash trough was not getting any oil. As a result the rod was running dry. Anyway, I would double check that your oil lines are clear before assuming you have a bad gauge.

I'd be more worried to see the pressure gauge reading low.My F-20 and Regular do the same as you describe.Depending on what weight oil you have the gauge should read down the scale some after the engine is up to temp.Sounds fine to me!

I wouldn't be too concerned about the oil pressure being high. It could be a combination of heavy oil and cold weather. If that's the case, the pressure will go down once the engine warms and heats the oil. As for the tractor shutting off after three minutes, that sounds like a classic partial blockage of the fuel line. Be sure to check the strainer, line and screen at the inlet to the carburetor and make sure that fuel flows freely.
