My father and I were plowing with his 1486 this past weekend and his transmission cover gets very hot. You can't hold your hand on it more than 3 seconds due to the heat. He's had different service people come out and work on it, but they said trying to find where the line is clogged up would take a lot of time and money, so he's been driving it as is. He had it under a load with the 16ft disk at full angle and depth on some pretty hard ground. I'm still trying to learn how to repair it, but he said that it had something to do with a ball getting stuck in one of the lines and not allowing the fluid to blow by. Since this is a big tractor I was wondering if there would be a simple way to find this or do you have to tear down the entire transmission and go through it line by line? Thanks for any help.

IH always told us that the transmission should run one hundred degrees hotter than outside temp.If it's 60 out then trans temp should be around 160,to hot to hang onto very long.

If this is a early 1486 with the gear hydraulic pump you could have an load valve that is not unloading most of the time they fail to load but they could fale to unload. If that is the case it will make the hydraulic oil get verrry hot. If this is the case the engine should be laboring when you are not using the hydraulics. If you have the newer tractor with the newer pump I don't know about it.

Be sure your radiator is clean, this means through the fins, the hyd. oil cooler is located in front of the radiator and must have air flow through it to cool the hydraulics. These 400 series engines don't run hot normally. I've seen some pretty plugged radiators and the engine not run hot.Loosen the oil cooler, pull it out and blow it and the radiator with air then water from garden hose (pressure washer can damage the fins). Just clean it all very good. The A/C condenser swings out if you have a cab & air.
You can remove either hose at the cooler and check for oil flow, only 20psi. at 6gpm. Should be flow from either the loose hose or the open end of the cooler.
