A Governor broke?

The governor on my '41 "A" quit working today. I had it running fine. Then I noticed some surge at high rpm. I went to go again, and went about 30 feet when it dropped to an idle and would not respond to speed control/throttle changes.

The speed control/throttle linkage moves the the arm on the governor just fine. The Carb connecting rod and rockshaft move freely, with spring tension returning them. Whe running, it idles, and I can run the rpm up by moving the carb conecting rod. But, the governer pulls back on it right away, droopping the rpm to idle.

It was getting dark, so I parked it. Could not see much... I looked at my books, but still am unsure where to start. The only idea I have is something stripped in the connection from the speed change lever on the outside and the spring lever on the inside?

Any ideas?

I had the same results when the butterfly shaft in the carb broke.

It is common for the spring inside the governor to break. Moisture condendses in the governor, and the spring may get rust pitted.

As you probably know, if you remove the governor shaft, be aware of where the mag drive slot is oriented, so you can reinstall it in the same position.

Where would one look for the spring and gaskets? I looked here on the YTmag store, but did not see anything for governors.

Almost certainly, your nearest CNH dealer could get them within a day or two.
